O Illy!

those of you who ever visited the photo gallery on the aoh mySpace (soon coming here, right ian?!) might know of my penchant for hose.  often mistaken for liederhosen, these accoutremonts can raise the level of gig from good to gigantic by bestowing a kind of confidence via sheer under-presense. thin, light, obnoxious, coloured in lavendar, wine, mocha stripes, etc, my 'show-hose' bring a gentlemans savvy and style to the sweaty indierawk stage-game . i bought all my hose during the bi-annual trips to philadelphia, right down there on South Street. ah, city of brotherly love and compassion - for my feet.

but things have changed. last pass thru we noticed that LESTER'S SHOES- that slice of timelessness where one bought both the VIKINGS Causal Shoe and the many coloured STACY ADAMS Hose - has disappeared! i walked back and forth past where i remembered it stood. touring musicians often have a paticular sense of place-smell that rarely falters. i oriented myself by heading to STEVE'S HAT SHOP and then doubling back...no, i wasnt nightmaring....Lester's is gone. gone the one-to-one, personal man type of customer service that has all but vanished in retail. gone the attention and lovingness to the most essential part of a man's outer ensemble, the part below the ankles. gone gone gone the magic philly foot touch i waited eagerly for each year. all gone underneath a new red-brick 'retail-opportunity' style gentrification plot. the march of mundanity is tough-ass shibboleth.

absolutely dejected (i was about to indoctrinate a younger man into the World of Lester's), we headed down south street. our eyes remained open and alert in case of signs of lester-life. this wasnt hard - given that ill-a-delph has a very strong mural/street art presence. it is one of the keys to a city's life signs, the amount and quality of (il)legal public art. anyone who knows the area im writing about will recognize the following photo.  it felt like a little kick in the pants. a reminder that altho my feeding frenzy had been stifled by forces greater then me, the Essential Spark of Human Spirit was at work in the 'hood, unperterbed and unstoppable. my sincerest thank you to whoever is the author/Mosaic Master of South Street.

the scrying game (Posted by A. Whiteman)

& I've been putting off putting my "voice" out here for some fear of reflection. ive been putting off putting my reflection out here for some fear of "voice". gazing at screens, reading, or more likely simply Viewing, its easy to get lost.  gazing at yourself, reading your own face, un peu de self knowledge, we know where that can lead.

who's down there anyway?

whoa! really? i screen you screen we all screen for eye screen!

Scrying (also called  seeing, or peeping) is a magic practice that involves seeing things psychically in a medium, usually for purposes of obtaining spiritual visions and more rarely for purposes of divination or fortune-telling. The media used are most commonly reflective, translucent, or luminescent substances such as crystals, stones, glass, mirrors, water, fire, or smoke. Scrying has been used in many cultures as a means of divining the past, present, or future. Depending on the culture and practice, the visions that come when one stares into the media are thought to come from God, spirits, the psychic mind, the devil, or the subconscious. Although scrying is most commonly done with a crystal ball, it may also be performed using any smooth surface.

is this screen/scrying a shelter and concealment OR is it a broadcast? i dont know. let the games begin.

Apostle Support / Support Apostle

A big thank you to all the musicians who wrote to us while we were trying to get some local opening support for this Ontario run. We wanted to reach out to bands that aren’t necessarily the “promoter’s  favourites” or what the "agent is pushing" but hopefully to meet and play with kids that are in bands we haven’t heard of and who also happened to dig our music. I’ve often said that aoh fans are either introverts! bath tub people!  or stoners!! and judging from alot of the responses, I’m not wrong!

When we were advancing these shows, we realized that we needed to have a smaller, solo or duo type situation as the support act- (which we realized after we started the search – sorry!) we have a bunch of new arrangements for the songs and are working on incorporating cajon and more acoustic stuff & fooling around with some sampler action etc, so we wanted the act prior to our performance to reflect that vibe every night. Especially given the size of some of the stages (grad club, Virginia!!!). anyway....a deep heartfelt thank you  again... some of the bands who had 5 and 6 members were freaking good and experimental and confusing and wicked and catchy and dreamy and  exactly what i would wanna hear if i was going to an apostle show but we don’ t have the means right now to be able to do that show just yet. We are super excited about the artists that will be playing and we hope you come early enough to hear them play too- if you submitted and you’re coming out, please come and say hello. And if not, we do hope our paths cross at some point in the future.

Apostle Of Hustle Announces Ontario Tour, Ticket Pre-sale, Digital Download Offer, And Contest (Posted by Andrew)

Apostle of Hustle announces a string of Ontario dates to coincide with the launch of their third full-length album, Eats Darkness, available May 19. Beginning today, fans will have the opportunity to purchase a ticket and digital album bundle for any of the newly announced shows, before they go on sale to the general public, exclusively at Gallery AC. As a special limited time offer with Apostle of Hustle pre-sale purchases, fans will receive a digital copy of Eats Darkness for an additional $4 of the ticket price. The album download will be accessible starting midnight EST May 19. As a bonus, MP3s of the songs Soul Unwind and Perfect Fit will be available for free download immediately upon purchase.

For aspiring songwriters and bands in the Southern Ontario area, Apostle of Hustle announces a search for support acts for their upcoming May dates. Interested artists can submit a brief summary of their music and why they think their band is suited to support Apostle of Hustle, (*note - please include contact info and a MySpace link, so the band can listen to your music! - also, provincial laws require performers to be 19 years of age or older in these venues). Though they may not respond to every submission, the band will listen to every entry. Interested musicians can submit info by email to supportaoh@arts-crafts.ca by May 1.

With Eats Darkness, the trio of Andrew Whiteman (guitar), Julian Brown (bass) and Dean Stone (drums) continue to push the boundaries of indie rock. Recorded in Toronto, and working once again with renowned producer and sound technician, Martin Davis Kinack (Sarah Harmer, Broken Social Scene, Hayden), Eats Darkness is based on the notion that the greatest art is often drawn from the darkest of experiences consuming darkness to expel light.

Tickets for all dates go on sale to the general public, April 9.

Eats Darkness Update

apropos of the present COLLAPSE! both economic and enviornmental, & the urge, despite it, still to engage these forces in some meaningful way, AOH is dropping our new jam "apostle of hustle eats darkness" on may 19th. downfile! & Enjoy! you can use these songs like weapons to help you battle your own bullshit or as blow-gun style stealth darts for taking down your enemies. whispering some of the lyrics or poetry quietly to yrself has been recommended to us as especially effective when used repetitively. AOH take it to the stage along highway 401 for the last two weeks of may and then we'll be swinging down to northeast baracklandia in june. check back here or our website for tour announcements. hungry for fresh vibes? 'Eats Darkness' is new music ito digest your world with.

Tickets for all dates go on sale to the general public, April 9.

short, intense bursts from the scattered apostle of hustle camp:

short, intense bursts from the scattered apostle of hustle camp:

1.   oct 4-7 we participated in the canwest cabaret festival doing two different shows. the first was being a part of a Leonard Cohen tribute concert with Mary Margaret O' Hara, Patricia O'Callaghan and others. however, instead of trying to wring a little more tired nostalgia out of the booomer crowd by covering every lenny tune they've already heard, we chose instead to select songs from the newer, more synthesizer friendly album Ten New Songs. the Zen-Reggae Cohen, if you will. Julian re-arranged these tunes in an out of control, swampy Time Out Of Mind style ( as he's done to covers from feist, stars, and huey lewis as well ) and we faired so well we're thinking about going to record some of them in the new year. imagine patricia o'callaghan drunk on absinthe singing with apostle....ha wait for it.

plus the cabaret itself was the type of 'high-brow from the gutter' entertainment we've always loved.  a concise show called 'demandAge' was written and performed featuring modern dance routines, the poetry of ezra pound - which inspired the piece itself, mindless excellent tv-style theatrics, the video work of ryan noth. 'demandAge' also featured a fair amount of new songs from aoh, some of which will hopefully arise on record in some way next year.  plus we filmed as much of it as we could and will try to put together an unreasonable facsimile of it. hopefully something for the 200Motels viewers out there.

2. quicky with tagaq: in case you didnt know dept::Tanya Tagaq is a vocalist from Canada's northland - her tech is based on a voice-game that her grandmother or her aunt taught her; but of course like any super-heroine, she has learned to use it in her own way. as a human, she is a full on freak and an amazingly gentle person, thotful, mature, acerbic, potty mouthed, confident. a pure hoser. so obviously we clicked with her both as a band and as a fellow van-mate. her voice apparently was pooched for part of our mini-run of three shows. we structured things this way - first tanya goes by herself, then we come in and do an improv with her. then she sings a few songs with apostle. then we would run our set and she'd come back and we'd do another, more lengthy improv. these got better and better as we did them. tagaq kept saying ' fck! i got fckin musical blue balls here, guys! my voice is so gone i cant really let loose' which WAS true. she was so frustrated bc her voice was so severly limited - altho i think the people that saw one of these shows ( london, guelph, and toronto )probably thinks differently. bc whether it was only a 20th of her power, the jams we started to dig into were DEFINATELY going somewhere.  there is absolutely gonna be a full-on apostle/tagaq tour next year.  we gave away a little homespun cd for everyone who came out to these shows...they are recordings from our first meeting with tanya on cbc's fuse show from last year - except again, julian brown came to the rescue and kinda re-mastered them, giving a more resonating and thumping quality.  if anyone didnt get a copy, we should probably get them up on itunes or the a&c gallery, non?

3. finally. im outta here!! moving to montreal is proving to be a good idea even before i actually do it. theres something to be said for a less ambitious outlook and that suits me fine. its the new Roland 404 sampler that im VERY Stoked about. planning on long days of hanging in julians basement, pre-habs game, and working thru chord books and pierre trudeau speech records looking for the next direction for apostle to go in the new year. ideas figuring very prominently include: further study of alchemy and its uses; learning quebecois; recording a 'jazz' record with a master of the voudun drums from nyc/haiti, working thru our recordings to see if theres an album lurking amidst all the fight songs, marches, poetry podcasts, and guitar patterns we've amassed;  writing another cabaret ( !! oh no!! he LIKES it!!); the aforementioned tagaq tour; eating all forms darkness like some karmic maple tree that breathes in all the lies and hypocrisy and breaths out reality country simple. too much to hope for maybe but broken glass is a lightning bolt if you throw it.
